Athletic Swimsuit

There are many swimsuit options for ostomates.  This year, I have decided to go with an athletic swimsuit, which suits my style.

For more about swimming with an ostomy, see my post on swimming: Swimming

The swimsuit pictured below, by Danskin, is designed for triathlon.  It is two pieces, and the waste line of the bottom piece comes up over my pouch.  The pouch is completely undetectable, and the swimsuit is very comfortable.   I have also tried on regular one-piece swimsuits that completely cover and disguise the pouch as well, so this style is not necessary.  I just happen to like it.

  1. You look great! My 78 year old Mother just had an Ileostomy. She was very active. But now she is having a very hard time with the no energy situation . She had septisimia and almost died, and was diagnotised about 2 to 3 hours before it killed her. She was in 3 hosps. before a wonderful Dr. was able to find the reason for her illness. She use to love to swim. I know she has a long recovery time ahead of her. But hopefully your picture will help to help in her recovery. I hope to get her to go to some kind of water arobics classes maybe even join a Yoga class with me. I pray you have a full and wonderful life ahead. I do beleive this will give my Mom hope. Thank you.

    • Thanks! I do hope she feels encouraged. If she will be spending a lot of time in the water, she can also get waterproof tape from the medical supply store that is curved, so that it is fairly easy to place around the flange to give you a little extra confidence. I have swam without the tape, but I like it both for the confidence factor and also because if you’re in the water for a long time the edges of the flange will start coming up a little. This doesn’t mean it is about to come off, but if you have the tape on it extends the life of the flange. It can be a little hard on the skin, though. If her skin is very sensitive it might not be comfortable, and I think at least for me it is not strictly necessary. I don’t know if you read my post on Swimming, but I’ve had no trouble swimming in pools, rivers, or even in the ocean. Good luck!
